Bangladesh Television to Broadcast 2026 World Cup Following Direct Deal with FIFA

Bangladesh Television (BTV) will broadcast the upcoming FIFA World Cup, ensuring nationwide access to the tournament following a direct agreement between the government and football’s global governing body. The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting confirmed the arrangement on Tuesday, marking a shift from previous acquisition models.

The decision follows approval from the Cabinet Committee on Government Purchase last Sunday. The government is acquiring the broadcasting rights directly from FIFA using the Direct Procurement Method (DPM), bypassing the need for a traditional tender process. The total cost for the rights stands at 727 million taka, representing a significant reduction of 250 million taka compared to the expenses incurred for the previous tournament.

This shift in strategy became necessary after a planned deal with Singapore-based Springbok PTE Ltd, the entity previously holding the rights for the region, failed to materialize. When the firm proved unable to finalize agreements with local broadcasters, it surrendered the rights, prompting the Bangladesh government to initiate direct negotiations with FIFA.

The 23rd edition of the World Cup is scheduled to commence on June 11, 2026, and will run through July 19. The tournament represents a historic collaboration, with 16 cities across Canada, Mexico, and the United States serving as joint hosts for the expanded global event.
