Bangladesh Summons Indian Deputy High Commissioner Over Airport Incident Involving Presidential Adviser

The Bangladeshi Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned India’s Acting High Commissioner in Dhaka, Pawan Badhe, on Monday to formally protest an incident involving the Prime Minister’s Information Adviser, Jahed Ur Rahman, at New Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport.
The summons followed an incident on Sunday evening, during which Indian immigration authorities denied Rahman entry to the country despite prior diplomatic notification of his visit. While authorities eventually cleared him for entry following intervention from higher levels of government, Rahman opted not to proceed with his travel plans. Instead, he returned to Dhaka via Colombo on Monday afternoon.

Speaking to reporters on Monday, Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman characterized the incident as “unfortunate.” State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam reinforced this sentiment, stating that the treatment of the Prime Minister’s adviser was entirely unacceptable and that the ministry is actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the disruption.
The adviser had been scheduled to lead the Bangladeshi delegation at the two-day Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) senior officials’ meeting, which commenced in New Delhi on Monday. Diplomatic officials have described the move to block the adviser’s entry as “mysterious,” noting that all necessary protocols had been completed well in advance of his arrival.
