Bangladesh Speaker meets Iranian counterpart in Tehran to offer condolences and support regional peace efforts

Bangladesh’s Speaker of the National Parliament, Hafiz Uddin Ahmad, held a high-level bilateral meeting with his Iranian counterpart, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, in Tehran on Friday. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the state funeral proceedings for the late Iranian leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

According to a statement released by the Bangladeshi Ministry of Foreign Affairs via the social media platform X, Speaker Ahmad expressed profound condolences over the death of the late leader, formally condemning the circumstances of his passing. During the exchange, Speaker Ghalibaf welcomed the Bangladeshi delegation, with Ahmad affirming the solidarity of the government and the people of Bangladesh with the Iranian people during their period of national mourning.

The discussions underscored the deep-rooted cultural and historical ties that have linked the two nations for centuries. Speaker Ahmad highlighted the long-standing friendly relations between Dhaka and Tehran, emphasizing the importance of maintaining robust bilateral engagement.

The conversation also touched upon regional geopolitics, with Ahmad commending Ghalibaf for his constructive role in the recent memorandum of understanding signed between Iran and the United States. Ahmad expressed optimism that the agreement would foster long-term stability and prosperity in the region, reaffirming Bangladesh’s commitment to supporting the ongoing peace process. He further urged all involved parties to utilize dialogue and diplomacy as primary tools for resolving outstanding disputes.

Concluding the meeting, Speaker Ahmad extended a formal invitation to Ghalibaf to visit Bangladesh at a mutually convenient time. The Bangladeshi delegation, led by the Speaker, arrived in Tehran on Thursday and was received by Deputy Speaker Hamid Reza Haji Babai. Speaker Ahmad is scheduled to return to Bangladesh on Saturday.
