Bangladesh Speaker delivers condolence message to Qatar Emir following death of former ruler

National Parliament Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad formally delivered a condolence message from Prime Minister Tareque Rahman to Qatar’s Emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, on Tuesday, following the passing of the former Emir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani. The message was presented during a state ceremony held at the Lusail Amiri Palace in Doha.

According to a statement issued by the Bangladesh Embassy in Qatar on Wednesday, Speaker Ahmad conveyed profound condolences on behalf of the Bangladeshi government and its citizens to the Emir and the bereaved royal family. During the meeting, the Speaker paid tribute to the late leader, widely recognized as the architect of modern Qatar, highlighting his visionary leadership and his instrumental role in strengthening bilateral ties between Qatar and Bangladesh.

Accompanying the Speaker during the official engagement were Prime Minister’s Foreign Affairs Adviser and Special Envoy Humayun Kabir and Bangladesh’s Ambassador to Qatar, Hazrat Ali Khan. Following the ceremony, Speaker Ahmad held a bilateral meeting with the Speaker of Qatar’s Shura Council, Hassan bin Abdullah Al-Ghanim.

In recognition of the late Emir’s deep ties to Bangladesh and the expatriate community, the Bangladeshi government declared July 15 a day of official national mourning. In observance of the tribute, the national flag was flown at half-mast at all government, semi-government, and autonomous institutions, as well as educational establishments and Bangladeshi diplomatic missions abroad. Speaker Ahmad, who arrived in Doha on Monday for the official visit, also conducted an inspection of the Bangladesh Embassy before concluding his trip.
