Bangladesh Health Minister Suspends Three Staff During Surprise Inspection in Satkhira

Health and Family Welfare Adviser Sardar Md. Sakhawat Hossain initiated a series of unannounced inspections across government healthcare facilities in Satkhira on Sunday, resulting in the immediate suspension of two physicians and a security guard for professional misconduct and absenteeism.

The Adviser began his tour at the Tala Upazila Health Complex at approximately 11:00 a.m., where he ordered the suspension of a doctor for prolonged unauthorized absence. During the same visit, a night guard was also dismissed following allegations of theft within the facility.

At 12:30 p.m., Hossain moved to the Satkhira Medical College Hospital, where he conducted a comprehensive review of hospital wards, kitchen facilities, and sanitation areas. During his engagement with patients, it was discovered that another physician, Sohana Selim, had been absent from her post for over a month without leave, leading to her immediate suspension. The tour concluded with an inspection of the Satkhira Sadar Hospital. The Adviser was accompanied by high-ranking local officials, including the Deputy Commissioner, medical college administrators, and representatives from the local health department.

Addressing the media following the inspections, the Adviser acknowledged the systemic strain on the nation’s medical infrastructure. He noted that the current ratio of physicians to patients remains inadequate, a challenge exacerbated by a long-standing pause in regular recruitment. However, he emphasized that the government is committed to a phased resolution of these issues.

Outlining future policy goals, the Adviser announced plans to upgrade 50-bed hospitals to 100-bed facilities and confirmed a strategic initiative to install 50 dialysis machines in every district and medical college hospital. He further detailed efforts to modernize pathology and physiotherapy services at the Upazila level, with long-term plans to integrate dialysis capabilities into those clinics. Beyond infrastructure upgrades, the government intends to improve the quality of care at the union level and launch a national health card initiative in the near future.
