Mentally ill man dies in hospital following vigilante beating in Narail

A 32-year-old man suffering from mental illness has died at Khulna Medical College Hospital, days after he was subjected to a brutal overnight beating by a mob in Narail’s Sadar upazila on suspicion of theft.
The victim, Anwar Hossain, a resident of Bashgram, had been missing since June 24 after wandering away from his home. The following morning, his family discovered that local residents in the Gobra area had restrained him to a tree and assaulted him throughout the night. Police eventually intervened, rescuing the victim and transporting him to Narail Sadar Hospital for emergency treatment.

Following the incident, the victim’s brother, Nobir Hossain, filed a case at the Narail Sadar Police Station, naming five individuals—Prosenjit, Sourav, Apoorba, Akash, and Hridoy—along with several unidentified suspects. As Anwar’s condition deteriorated, his family transferred him to Khulna Medical College Hospital on June 29, where he succumbed to his injuries on Thursday morning.
The accused individuals have since fled the area, evading authorities. The mother of one of the suspects, Prosenjit, claimed that the victim had been spotted tampering with a van near their home, prompting her son to call for help. She stated that while a crowd gathered at the scene, she was unaware of who participated in the physical assault, asserting that her son eventually assisted in taking the victim to the hospital.

Narail Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Ajay Kumar Kunda confirmed that the initial assault case will now be upgraded to include murder charges. Authorities have launched an investigation and are actively searching for the suspects.
