Bangla Academy President Abul Kasem Fazlul Haq dies at 85

Professor Abul Kasem Fazlul Haq, the president of Bangla Academy and a former chairman of the University of Dhaka’s Department of Bangla, died Sunday in Dhaka. He was 85.
His death was confirmed to the press by Mohammad Azam, the director general of Bangla Academy and a former student of the professor. According to Azam, Professor Haq fell ill while dining at a restaurant in the city’s Mirpur-1 area between 2:30 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. He was subsequently transported to the National Heart Foundation Hospital, where attending physicians declared him dead.

Born on September 30, 1940, in Pakundia village of Kishoreganj, Professor Haq dedicated his career to academia, serving for many years as a professor of Bangla at the University of Dhaka. He was widely recognized as a staunch advocate for the implementation of the Bangla language across all tiers of society.
Beyond his academic contributions, Professor Haq was a prolific writer and editor. He served as the editor for the journals “Sundaram” and “Lokayat” and authored more than 20 books, including “Ekushey February Andolon,” “Rajneeti Darshan,” “Sahitya Chinta,” and “Sanskritir Sahaj Katha.” He also edited significant works such as “Itihaser Aloke Bangladesher Sanskriti” and “Swadeshchinta.”

His scholarly achievements were formally recognized in 1981 when he received the prestigious Bangla Academy Literary Award.
