Authorities crack down on noise pollution and safety violations in Tanguar Haor following youth death

Local authorities in Sunamganj have launched a crackdown on tourist boats operating in the Tanguar Haor, levying fines and seizing equipment following a string of safety and environmental violations. During an enforcement operation on Sunday, officials fined the owners of six boats, confiscated 14 sound systems, and detained six individuals for ignoring standing prohibitions against the use of high-decibel loudspeakers and disruptive behavior in the ecologically sensitive wetlands.

The administrative action follows a tragic incident over the weekend in which a teenager named Tamim went missing after falling from a boat. The youth had been participating in a group outing where passengers were dancing and playing loud music on the rooftop of a vessel. His body was recovered by authorities on Sunday afternoon, prompting the Tahirpur Upazila administration to intensify patrols and enforce environmental guidelines intended to protect the region’s fragile biodiversity.

Tahirpur Upazila Executive Officer Mehedi Hasan Manik led the operation, emphasizing that while the administration welcomes tourism, visitors must adhere to safety protocols and respect the local environment. He noted that the growth of the tourism sector should not come at the expense of the well-being of local residents or the integrity of the ecosystem. He warned that further non-compliance with regional directives will result in stringent legal consequences.

Sunamganj-1 Member of Parliament Kamruzzaman Kamrul echoed these sentiments, noting that Tanguar Haor has emerged as one of the country’s most popular destinations, second only to Cox’s Bazar. While pledging continued support for the development of local tourism, he stressed that the haor is a vital national asset. He called upon boat operators, houseboat owners, and tourists to exercise greater responsibility to ensure that the area’s natural heritage remains protected from environmental degradation.
