At Least 15 Injured in Clash Between Rival Student Party Factions in Noakhali

At least 15 people were injured following a violent clash between two rival factions of the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) in Noakhali Sadar Upazila on Saturday. The confrontation occurred near the Ashadia Union Parishad office at approximately 5:00 p.m. amid tensions over the formation of a new local committee.

The conflict stems from the announcement of a new convener committee for the Ashadia Union unit of the JCD last Tuesday. The Upazila unit appointed Yasin Alam as convener and Abdullah Al Bin Mahid as member secretary. Mosharraf Hossain, the former general secretary of the union unit, reportedly became aggrieved after being excluded from the new leadership, prompting his supporters to protest against the committee’s formation.

The violence erupted during a victory procession organized by the newly formed committee near the Dinumonir Hat area. According to witnesses, the procession was intercepted, leading to a series of counter-attacks and a subsequent clash between the two groups. The injured were transported to various private hospitals in the district town for treatment.

Yasin Alam, Abdullah Al Bin Mahid, and joint convener Masumur Rahman accused the excluded group of orchestrating the attack with the help of outsiders to sabotage their peaceful procession. They have demanded accountability for the violence.

In response, Mosharraf Hossain rejected the allegations, claiming that the new committee was formed through bias and the exclusion of qualified candidates. He stated that his group was conducting a legitimate protest against what he termed an “illegal committee” when they were attacked by the new committee’s supporters.

Karim Uddin, general secretary of the Sadar Upazila JCD, denied claims of bias in the committee’s formation, alleging that Hossain instigated the disorder and attacked members of the new committee. He maintained that the party is working with the administration to restore order.

The clash briefly disrupted traffic on the main road connecting Sonapur, Kabirhat, and Companiganj. Law enforcement, including the Detective Branch and personnel from Sudharam Police Station, arrived at the scene to bring the situation under control.

Sudharam Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Nazrul Islam confirmed that the area is currently peaceful and police patrols have been intensified. Authorities noted that no formal written complaints have been filed by either side as of Saturday evening.
