Allegations of Extortion and Fertilizer Smuggling Cloud Meghna River Incident

Authorities in Bhola are investigating conflicting reports of illicit fertilizer smuggling and extortion involving a bulk carrier intercepted in the Meghna River estuary near Char Nizam. The incident, which occurred late Thursday night near the border of the Monpura and Charfashion upazilas, has sparked allegations of large-scale corruption and local power struggles.
According to local accounts, a vessel carrying several hundred sacks of fertilizer was intercepted by a group of residents led by Kamrul Khalifa, Kamrul Master, and Nirob. Allegations have emerged that the intercepting group seized approximately 200 sacks of fertilizer and demanded 500,000 taka in exchange for allowing the remainder of the cargo to proceed. Witnesses claim the diverted goods were subsequently hidden within the Char Nizam area.

The incident gained traction after a video circulated on social media showing local political activists, including members of the Jatiyatabadi Juba Dal and the 19-number Dhalchar Union Swechchasebak Dal, traveling to the scene by speedboat. In the footage, individuals claim they intercepted the vessel to prevent illegal trafficking, asserting that other boats had already bypassed the area with similar shipments. Leaked audio recordings also appear to suggest internal disputes among local factions regarding the distribution of the seized goods.
Kamrul Islam Khalifa, one of the primary individuals accused by residents, has categorically denied the allegations of extortion and large-scale theft. He asserted that the reports of a 500,000-taka payoff are fabricated, describing them as a smear campaign orchestrated by rivals in Dhalchar. He claimed that the intercepted vessel was a smaller boat carrying a minimal amount of fertilizer, of which only 12 to 15 sacks were recovered, and that the main cargo had already escaped before his group could intervene.

Agriculture officials and law enforcement agencies have launched separate inquiries to verify the conflicting claims. Bhola District Agriculture Officer Md. Khairul Islam Mallik noted that the origin and intended destination of the fertilizer remain unclear. He suggested that such incidents occasionally involve inter-group rivalries where one party attempts to frame another by alleging smuggling activities under the guise of enforcement.
Md. Ahsan Kabir, the officer-in-charge of South Aicha Police Station, stated that the department was alerted to the situation on Friday and has since coordinated with the Coast Guard. While officers have been dispatched to investigate, authorities have yet to confirm the presence of any illicit shipment or the veracity of the theft allegations. Officials maintain that legal action will follow if the investigation uncovers evidence of criminal activity.
