A new case of artificial intelligence (AI) cameras to enforce traffic laws has surfaced after a new fraud case. A fraudster is sending fake messages on mobile phones to pay fines, saying that they have been sued by AI cameras. Several people have already received such fake messages.

However, the officials of the traffic department advised everyone to be careful claiming that no such message is being sent by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).

The fake message titled ‘Final Notice Regarding Payment of Fines’ mentions the fine number, date, type of offence, penalty if the fine is not paid within the specified time. Apart from this, a link is also being sent stating the deadline for payment of fine. By entering the link, the amount of penalty is known.

Officials of DMP’s traffic department say that the personal information of the person may be stolen through this message. They requested everyone not to enter this link.

The traffic department of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) started using AI technology experimentally at various intersections of Dhaka from May 7. AI-based cameras are equipped with software to detect violations of road traffic laws. According to the instructions given by the software, the camera detects the vehicle in case of violation of the law. Accordingly, the case is being filed digitally in the name of the concerned vehicle owner. However, initially the violation of the law is manually analyzed and the case information is sent by post.
