Measles symptoms claim three more lives as national death toll hits 918

Three people have died from measles-like symptoms in the last 24 hours, health officials reported on Tuesday.

According to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), the fatalities occurred between 8:00 a.m. Monday and 8:00 a.m. Tuesday. This brings the total number of deaths associated with measles symptoms since March 15 to 819. When combined with 99 confirmed measles deaths, the total toll during the current outbreak stands at 918.

Epidemiologists note that while measles can affect individuals of any age, children remain the most vulnerable demographic. Health authorities classify all deaths occurring with measles-like symptoms during an outbreak as measles-related.

Data released by the DGHS on Tuesday indicates that 1,002 new cases showing symptoms of the disease were recorded in the last 24 hours. Since March 15, the cumulative number of patients presenting with such symptoms has reached 144,780.

In terms of clinical confirmation, 59 new cases of measles were verified in the past day. Since mid-March, the country has reported a total of 17,989 confirmed cases.

Medical facilities have admitted 126,289 patients exhibiting measles symptoms since March 15. Of those, 121,880 have recovered and been discharged.

Regarding the most recent fatalities, officials confirmed that no deaths were attributed to laboratory-confirmed measles in the last 24-hour cycle. Of the three patients who died from measles-like symptoms, one was from the Dhaka division, while two were from the Sylhet division.
