Man sentenced for plotting terror attack at Taylor Swift concert

An Austrian court has sentenced a 21-year-old man to 15 years in prison for orchestrating a terror plot targeting Taylor Swift’s scheduled concerts in Vienna earlier this year. The defendant, identified in court documents only as “Beran A.” due to privacy laws, was convicted of multiple counts related to terrorism, including conspiracy to commit a terrorist attack.
The foiled plot emerged in August 2024, just days before the pop superstar was set to perform three sold-out shows as part of her “Eras Tour.” The events, which were expected to draw approximately 200,000 fans, were ultimately canceled after intelligence provided by the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency allowed Austrian authorities to arrest the suspect. Prosecutors revealed that the man had pledged allegiance to the Islamic State and had actively attempted to acquire weaponry, including machine guns and hand grenades, to carry out a mass-casualty attack.

During the proceedings, court-appointed psychiatric experts testified that the defendant showed no signs of mental illness, concluding that his radicalization was not driven by psychological factors. A second defendant, a 21-year-old Slovak national, was also convicted in connection with the case and received a 12-year sentence, though investigators did not find evidence of his direct involvement in the specific plot against the Swift concerts.
Prior to the sentencing, the primary defendant expressed remorse for his actions in court. Taylor Swift later addressed the incident, stating that the threat deeply affected her, while acknowledging that the swift intervention by law enforcement was instrumental in preventing a potential tragedy.
