Hollywood Actress Reveals Decade of Partial Blindness in One Eye

Hollywood actress Anne Hathaway has revealed she secretly battled severe vision loss in one eye for a decade, a struggle that began in her early thirties and profoundly impacted her mental well-being before a successful surgery restored her sight. The 43-year-old star of “The Devil Wears Prada” shared her personal journey publicly for the first time during an appearance on The New York Times’ “Popcast” podcast on April 22.
Hathaway disclosed that she developed “early onset cataracts” in her left eye around age 30, a condition more commonly associated with older individuals. Medically, cataracts cloud the eye’s normally clear lens, making vision appear hazy or like looking through a frosted window. This impairment made everyday tasks such as reading, driving at night, and even discerning facial expressions exceedingly difficult.

The deteriorating vision created immense mental stress for the actress. “It got so bad that my left eye was almost blind,” Hathaway recounted, noting she only fully grasped the extent of her vision loss after undergoing corrective surgery.
Following the successful operation, Hathaway experienced a profound sense of relief. “When I could see all the colors of the world clearly again, that’s when I truly understood how bad my eyes had been,” she said, adding that the return of her eyesight significantly alleviated her mental strain. “I hadn’t realized how much pressure this issue was putting on my nervous system. Now, waking up every morning and seeing everything clearly feels like a miracle.”

In a separate interview published May 21 in the fashion magazine ELLE, Hathaway also addressed recent speculation regarding her youthful appearance and alleged plastic surgery.
Social media had buzzed with rumors of a facelift or other cosmetic procedures after her “taut, youthful look” at the recent Cannes Film Festival. Hathaway subsequently posted a tutorial video demonstrating how a specific braided hairstyle could create a “lifted” effect, visually debunking the claims.
“We live in a time where people readily accept things as truth that are often wrong,” Hathaway told ELLE. “The rumor became so strong that it was important for me to present my own truth.” She emphasized the casual way people assume “such a big medical decision” without evidence. “I just wanted to show that, no, I didn’t have any surgery. It wasn’t a big medical decision; it was just two braids!”
However, the acclaimed actress concluded her remarks with a characteristic touch of candor, admitting, “Of course, having said all that, I will say this: Maybe one day in the future, I actually might get a facelift!”
