Unidentified criminals snatched BDT 500,000 in broad daylight from A M M Touhidur Rashid, an additional director of Bangladesh Bank, while he was returning home after withdrawing cash from a commercial bank in Gazipur's Kaliakair upazila on Sunday (today's date/September afternoon).
According to police and the victim's account, the incident unfolded around 2:30 PM near the Banshai Bridge on the Dhaka-Tangail Highway. Earlier in the day, the central bank official visited the Kaliakair branch of Sonali Bank and withdrew the money from his father S M Harunur Rashid's account. Accompanied by his uncle Tasnim Uddin, Rashid boarded a battery-run autorickshaw to head back home.
As their vehicle approached the Banshai Bridge area, a white private car suddenly intercepted the autorickshaw from behind. An individual from the vehicle reached out, forcibly grabbed the bag containing the cash, and the perpetrators swiftly sped away toward Tangail.
Immediately following the robbery, Rashid dialed the national emergency service hotline to seek law enforcement intervention. Although local police units were dispatched promptly, the perpetrators had already fled the scene by the time law enforcement arrived.
In response to the incident, Rashid lodged a formal written complaint at the Kaliakair Police Station at approximately 6:00 PM on Sunday.
in-Charge (OC) Sahidul Islam stated that law enforcement officials were rushed to the location upon receiving the alert. Legal proceedings are currently underway, and police forces have launched an active manhunt to apprehend the culprits involved in the highway robbery.
