Sandals left at crime scene help police crack Sirajganj autorickshaw driver murder after two years

Police solved the 2024 murder of auto-rickshaw driver Kasim Uddin in Sirajganjs Raiganj upazila and arrested his younger brother along with an associate following a breakthrough in the investigation

Police have unraveled the murder mystery surrounding the killing of battery-run autorickshaw driver Koshim Uddin in Sirajganj's Raiganj upazila, arresting two individuals, including the victim's younger brother, more than two years after the crime took place. Additional Superintendent of Police (Raiganj Circle) Saiful Islam Khan officially disclosed the breakthrough to the media on Sunday afternoon (today), following judicial confessions made by the suspects.

The initial arrest was executed on Thursday in the Nimgachhi area of Sonakhara union, where law enforcement detained the victim's younger brother, Abdul Malek, 45. Building on this lead, police subsequently apprehended his associate, Kakoli Rani, 40, from the same locality on Friday. Following their interrogation, both suspects recorded voluntary confessional statements before a local court on Saturday, laying bare the chilling details of the premeditated assassination.

Koshim Uddin, 48, was brutally murdered on July 1, 2024, in the Nimgachhi area. In the immediate aftermath of the killing, the victim's wife filed a formal First Information Report (FIR) against unidentified perpetrators. While the initial suspicion pointed toward a violent autorickshaw hijacking, exhaustive police investigations ultimately exposed a darker domestic conspiracy rooted in a prolonged familial dispute between the two brothers.

Detailing the investigative breakthrough, Additional Superintendent Saiful Islam Khan explained that the case had initially stalled due to a complete lack of actionable clues. However, investigators breathed new life into the dormant inquiry a few months ago by re-examining physical evidence recovered from the crime scene, notably two pairs of sandals found near the victim's body. This crucial forensic clue cast immediate suspicion on the victim's younger brother, whose subsequent detention and intense interrogation cracked the case wide open.

According to the suspects' court statements, Abdul Malek orchestrated the assassination by hiring external operatives and deliberately staging the incident as an autorickshaw robbery to mislead investigators. On the fateful night, Malek and two hired accomplices ambushed Koshim Uddin in the deep hours, hacking him indiscriminately before fleeing with his vehicle. Meanwhile, Kakoli Rani—who has been residing in a rented home in the Nimgachhi area for approximately a decade—was instrumental in luring the victim to the designated murder site in exchange for 20,000 Taka.

Police confirmed that the comprehensive probe has successfully unearthed the underlying motives, meticulously crafted blueprint, and identities of those involved in the heinous crime. Law enforcement operations remain actively underway to capture the remaining fugitives linked to the murder.
