Police charge madrasa teacher and brother in Netrokona child rape case following DNA confirmation of paternity

Police in Netrokona’s Madan upazila have filed a charge sheet against a religious teacher and his brother in connection with the rape and subsequent pregnancy of an 11-year-old girl. The accused are madrasa teacher Amanullah Mahdi, also known as Sagar Hujur, and his older brother Maimon, also known as Mamun Miah.

The investigation officer, Sub-Inspector Akhtaruzzaman of Madan Police Station, confirmed that the charge sheet was submitted to the court inspector at the Madan Amoli Court on Thursday afternoon. Court Police Inspector Riad Mahmud confirmed receipt of the document, noting that it will now be processed for a formal hearing, where the court will schedule the commencement of the trial.

Nurul Kabir, the government prosecutor for the District Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal, stated that the case will be transferred to the specialized women and children protection court. He expressed confidence in a swift judicial process, highlighting that DNA testing has provided conclusive evidence of paternity. According to the prosecutor, forensic laboratory reports confirmed a match between the newborn’s DNA and that of the accused teacher.

The victim, who was studying at a local women’s Qawmi madrasa founded by the accused four years ago, had been living with her grandparents while her mother worked in Sylhet. The abuse came to light in April after the girl’s mother returned home, noticing physical changes in her daughter. Medical examinations at a local clinic confirmed that the child was pregnant.

When the girl’s mother confronted the teacher’s family to seek justice, she was allegedly verbally abused and assaulted by the teacher’s brother, Maimon. The mother subsequently filed a case against both men on April 23. The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested the primary accused, Amanullah Mahdi, in Gouripur, Mymensingh, on May 6.

In accordance with court orders, the victim was placed in a government-run safe home in Sylhet under the Department of Social Services on May 12 for her security and welfare. She gave birth to a daughter on July 2. Forensic samples collected from the infant and the mother on July 29 were compared against the samples taken from the accused teacher on May 17, ultimately establishing the genetic link.
