Former Education Minister Dipu Moni Withdraws Bail Plea at International Crimes Tribunal Following Husbands Death

Former Education Minister Dipu Moni informed the International Crimes Tribunal on Thursday that she wishes to withdraw her bail plea, stating that she no longer has a home to return to following the death of her husband.
Appearing before International Crimes Tribunal-1 in connection with a case involving crimes against humanity committed during the July mass uprising, the former minister addressed the court directly. The tribunal had scheduled Thursday for her bail hearing, which was originally filed by her legal counsel on April 26.
Addressing the court from the witness box, Dipu Moni stated that her husband, Towfique Nawaz, passed away on the night of August 18. She explained that she had sought bail earlier to care for her husband, who had been bedridden for seven years and unable to speak. She noted that while she balanced her official duties with his care for five years, her incarceration forced her husband to live in hiding in an unknown location, separated from her.
“My husband could not accept that life, and I could not take care of him,” Dipu Moni told the court, adding that her husband had been hospitalized four months prior to his death due to deteriorating health. “My need to go home has ended. I have no one left to go to. My children want bail, but I no longer feel the urgency to return home.”
The tribunal, led by Justice Md. Golam Mortuza Majumdar, expressed sympathy regarding her personal circumstances. However, the bench noted that they must consider various legal factors before reaching a decision.
In addition to Justice Majumdar, the three-member judicial panel includes Justice Md. Shafiul Alam Mahmud and Judge Md. Mohitul Huq Enam Chowdhury. The tribunal has adjourned the matter and set September 17 as the new date for the proceedings.
