Mobile Court Fines Chougachha Businessman for Illegal Fertilizer Stockpiling

JESSORE, Bangladesh — A mobile court in Chaugachha upazila fined a local fertilizer trader 20,000 taka on Wednesday for hoarding large quantities of fertilizer without valid documentation. The operation, led by Assistant Commissioner (Land) G.M.A. Munib, resulted in the seizure of 13,550 kilograms of agricultural supplies from the shop of Khairul Islam, 45, located in the Parbazar area.

During the inspection, authorities discovered 271 sacks of fertilizer, including 28 sacks of MOP, 147 sacks of TSP, 9 sacks of DAP, and 87 sacks of urea, with an estimated retail market value of 353,350 taka. The trader failed to produce any legal permits or licensing for the storage of these goods.

Following the seizure, the court ordered the confiscated fertilizer to be sold to local farmers at government-regulated prices, with the proceeds to be deposited into the state treasury. Khairul Islam confessed to the charges, leading to the penalty under sections 12 and 18 of the Fertilizer Management Act, 2006. The trader has signed a formal undertaking promising to cease all illegal storage and trading activities.

Assistant Commissioner Munib stated that the action was taken to curb illegal hoarding and ensure fair distribution for the agricultural community. The operation was attended by Upazila Agriculture Officer Musabbir Hussain, Deputy Assistant Agriculture Officer Saiful Islam, Sub-Inspector of Chaugachha Police Station Hossain Patwari, and representatives from the local business and fertilizer dealer associations.

This enforcement follows a separate incident on Tuesday, where local residents intercepted and seized 37 sacks of mixed fertilizer that were being smuggled out of the area. In that instance, a mobile court also mandated that the recovered supplies be sold to farmers at official government rates.
