Former husband arrested after severing woman’s hand in Meherpur attack

MEHERPUR — A 28-year-old man was taken into police custody Wednesday morning following a brutal attack that left his former wife with a severed hand and her parents critically injured in Meherpur town.
The suspect, Sayan Mia, a truck driver and resident of Mallikpara, was apprehended by Meherpur Sadar police at approximately 7:00 a.m. in a mango orchard. Authorities allege the attack was motivated by resentment over a recent divorce.
The incident occurred at approximately 1:30 a.m. on Tuesday at the victim’s family home in the Lord Market area. According to police, Sayan Mia gained access to the house by climbing through a window grille. He then launched a violent assault on 26-year-old Smriti Khatun, a second-year undergraduate student, while she was sleeping.
During the attack, the suspect used a sharp weapon to sever Smriti Khatun’s right hand. Her parents, Selim Hossain, an electronics merchant, and Rebeka Khatun, were also seriously wounded when they attempted to intervene and protect their daughter.
The victims were initially transported to Meherpur General Hospital. M.M. Jahidul Islam, the hospital’s resident medical officer, confirmed that all three arrived in critical condition. Due to the severity of their injuries, including the traumatic amputation and deep lacerations, they were subsequently referred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for advanced emergency care.
Police investigations reveal that Smriti Khatun and Sayan Mia married on August 15 against her family’s wishes. Following pressure from her family, she divorced him on August 23.
Officer-in-Charge of Meherpur Sadar Police Station Humayun Kabir stated that preliminary investigations confirm the attack stemmed from the recent marital dispute. The suspect is currently being interrogated, and formal legal proceedings are underway.
