BNP expels Kulaura leader over administrative intimidation and assault allegations

KULAURA, Bangladesh — The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has expelled a local leader in Kulaura, Moulvibazar, following allegations of administrative obstruction and the public torture of two individuals.
Almas Miah, who served as the joint general secretary of the Joychandi Union committee of the BNP, was removed from the party following a formal directive issued Saturday. The expulsion order, signed by Joychandi Union BNP President Atiqur Rahman and General Secretary Md. Mohitur Rahman, stated that Miah was dismissed from all organizational positions and his primary membership due to proven violations of party discipline and anti-organizational activities. Party members have been strictly instructed to sever all ties with him.
The disciplinary action follows a series of incidents involving administrative confrontations and allegations of violent misconduct. On August 19, the Assistant Commissioner (Land) of Kulaura, Pronoy Biswas, led a mobile court operation to address persistent traffic congestion caused by unauthorized autorickshaw stands. During the operation, one driver was sentenced to seven days in prison, and several others were fined for traffic violations.
In response to the enforcement action, Miah, who also leads the local autorickshaw workers’ union, reportedly organized a blockade of the main road. Witnesses and local officials stated that Miah led protestors in shouting derogatory slogans against the Assistant Commissioner. The blockade was eventually dispersed after intervention from senior BNP leadership.
Furthermore, Miah has been implicated in a separate incident involving the physical assault of two youths. A four-minute and 29-second video circulating on social media shows Miah and an unidentified individual beating two men with belts while attempting to force a confession regarding the theft of an autorickshaw.
Joychandi Union BNP President Atiqur Rahman confirmed that the expulsion was prompted by both the obstruction of the mobile court and the viral video depicting the torture of the two youths.
Inspector (Investigation) Habibur Rahman of Kulaura Police Station stated that while no formal complaint has been filed by the victims, authorities have launched an investigation into the matter and are working to identify the individuals seen in the video.
When reached for comment regarding the allegations, Miah’s wife stated that he was unavailable as he was sleeping. Miah did not respond to subsequent attempts to reach him for comment.
