Bangladesh Police Association demands legal action against online misinformation campaigns targeting officers

The Bangladesh Police Association has formally called for legal action against individuals spreading what it describes as “false, fabricated, and imaginary” information about police officers on social media. In a statement issued on Monday, the organization warned that an organized campaign is underway to undermine the force by labeling officers—ranging from the police chief to station-level officials—as collaborators of the previous administration.
The association reported that these defamatory campaigns often target officers immediately upon their assignment to new stations. According to the police body, individuals posing as social media-based journalists are spearheading these efforts to incite public hostility and damage the reputations of professional personnel. These actors are accused of disseminating unverified allegations to erode the morale of the force and cast doubt on the integrity of honest, efficient officers.
Addressing the broader context, the statement clarified that the association does not shield misconduct. It asserted that if any police member is found to have been involved in past instances of disappearances, extrajudicial killings, or torture, they should be held accountable through transparent and impartial investigations conducted under existing laws. However, the organization insisted that targeting officers solely on the basis of their employment tenure during the previous regime is unacceptable and serves to hinder the current government’s efforts to maintain public order.
The association cautioned that these coordinated smear campaigns are intended to destabilize the police force and sow public distrust, ultimately weakening the rule of law. Urging a cessation of these activities, the body called for strict legal measures against those found creating or propagating malicious misinformation. It concluded by requesting the cooperation of the media, the public, and relevant stakeholders to help maintain the professionalism of the police force during this critical transition.
