Court denies remand for BNP leader in Dhaka murder case after plaintiff disputes identity

A Dhaka court on Sunday denied a police request to remand Monowar Hossain Jiban, also known as Ledu Hasan, in connection with the murder of BNP leader Abul Bashar, ordering him instead to be sent to jail. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mahbub Alam issued the order following a hearing, as confirmed by Sub-Inspector Mizanur Rahman of the prosecution department.
The request for a seven-day remand was filed by the investigating officer, Sub-Inspector Hafizur Rahman of Adabor Police Station. However, the motion was dismissed after the victim’s wife, Smriti Akhter—the plaintiff in the case—appeared in court and submitted an affidavit stating that the accused was not involved in the crime.
Jiban, a former joint convener of the Adabor unit BNP, was arrested by Rapid Action Battalion (RAB-2) personnel on July 28 in the Mohammadia Housing Society area of Mohammadpur. While previous testimony from other suspects in custody alleged that Jiban had supplied the weapon used by the primary assailant, Parvez, the plaintiff’s intervention altered the course of the remand hearing. To date, ten individuals have been arrested in connection with the high-profile homicide.
The fatal incident originated from a dispute over a FIFA World Cup match between Japan and Brazil on June 29. Tensions escalated between local factions, led by unit president Saddam Hossain and a group headed by Majnu and Shahid, after a celebratory whistle-blowing incident triggered a confrontation. Despite an attempt at mediation on July 1, the situation devolved into violence.
According to police reports, as Abul Bashar attempted to de-escalate the clash, he and Saddam Hossain were attacked with sharp weapons. Bashar succumbed to his injuries at Dhaka Medical College Hospital, while Saddam continues to receive medical treatment for his wounds. The case, filed by Bashar’s wife three days after the attack, details a targeted assault by assailants lying in wait at a street intersection in the Nobodoy Housing area.
