Police Mediate Marriage Following Standoff at Dinajpur Home

A 35-year-old mother of three staged a sit-in protest at the home of a local farmer in Hakimpur, Dinajpur, on Wednesday, demanding that he honor an alleged commitment to marry her. The standoff drew significant attention from local residents, prompting police to intervene to prevent a potential escalation of the dispute.

The man, identified as Emazul Haque, is a father of one. According to local officials and law enforcement, the two had been engaged in an extramarital affair for approximately one year. Tensions peaked when the woman arrived at Haque’s residence Wednesday morning after he reportedly refused her recent demands to formalize their relationship through marriage.

Hakimpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Zakir Hossain stated that officers were dispatched to the scene to manage the gathering crowd and restore order. To resolve the volatile situation, police brought both individuals to the station and contacted their respective family members to facilitate a mediated settlement.

The dispute was ultimately resolved through local intervention late Wednesday night. A member of the local Union Parishad confirmed that the two families reached an agreement for the pair to marry, establishing a dowry of 100,000 taka. Following the agreement, police released both individuals into the custody of their families at midnight, with plans for a formal wedding ceremony to be finalized in the near future.
