Two children killed in separate Chittagong landslides amid heavy rainfall

Two children died in separate landslide incidents in Chattogram on Wednesday, as heavy, persistent rainfall continues to heighten safety risks across the region.
The first incident occurred in the Jangle Salimpur area of Sitakunda upazila, where a 10-month-old infant, Ashraful Islam, lost his life after a hillside collapsed onto a residential structure. The infant’s mother, Lamia Akter, was also trapped under the debris but was rescued by local residents and provided with emergency medical assistance.

Sitakunda Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md. Fakhrul Islam confirmed the fatality, noting that the area had been under heavy rainfall for four consecutive days. Despite official warnings and public announcements urging residents to vacate the precarious hillsides, many remained in high-risk zones. Following the tragedy, local authorities provided financial aid to the victim’s family for medical expenses and ongoing recovery efforts.
In a separate incident later that afternoon, a 13-year-old girl named Samia Islam died in a landslide in the Mayor Goli area of Chashma Hill, located within the city. Fire Service personnel from the Bayezid Bostami station responded to the scene and recovered the girl’s body from the wreckage.

Local authorities have continued to warn residents living near hilly terrain to remain vigilant as the sustained monsoon weather persists, increasing the likelihood of further ground instability.
