Nahid Islam Accuses Government of Betraying July Uprising Mandate

Jatiya Nagorik Party (NCP) convener Nahid Islam has accused the incumbent government of betraying the public mandate, claiming that the administration is actively ignoring the national referendum and the core tenets of the July uprising. Speaking at the launch of the party’s “July March” in Kaliganj on Monday, Islam asserted that the February elections functioned as a dual process—a legislative vote and a referendum on national reform—in which 70 percent of voters signaled their support for sweeping structural change.
The protest march, which marks the beginning of a month-long program commemorating the second anniversary of the July mass uprising, saw Islam launch a scathing critique of the current leadership. He argued that by failing to implement the reforms demanded during the anti-Hasina movement, the government is engaging in “treachery” against the nation.

Islam outlined five primary demands during his address, placing the implementation of the popular reform mandate at the forefront of the party’s agenda. Beyond political structural shifts, he emphasized the urgent need for comprehensive job creation for the nation’s youth and a definitive resolution to the ongoing energy crisis. He criticized the government’s recent budget, characterizing it as inadequate to address the severe load-shedding that continues to disrupt daily life across the country.
The NCP leader also leveled sharp criticism at the government’s handling of national security and economic stability. He questioned the competence of the Home Minister, citing recent parliamentary discourse that labeled the minister’s own constituency a hub for drug trafficking. Islam argued that failing to manage law and order in one’s own district undermines the government’s broader credibility to stabilize the country and control the rising cost of living.

The inaugural event in Gazipur was attended by several high-ranking NCP officials, including Member Secretary Akhtar Hossain and Chief Organizer (Northern Region) Sarjis Alam. They were joined by prominent figures from the party’s youth and student wings, as well as local organizational leaders.
As the NCP mobilizes for its month-long campaign, party leadership has issued a call for nationwide participation. The “July March” is intended to serve as a platform for organizing public support to hold the government accountable to the commitments made in the wake of the mass uprising.
