Chakaria Police Officer Withdrawn Following Assault During Attempted Rescue of Teenager

Police authorities in Cox’s Bazar have withdrawn a sub-inspector from active duty following allegations of excessive force and physical abuse during the rescue of a kidnapped teenager in Chakaria. The incident, which occurred Saturday afternoon in Fashiakhali Union, sparked public outcry after video footage of the altercation began circulating on social media.
The operation was initiated after a resident of Eidgaon upazila filed a formal complaint at Chakaria Police Station reporting his daughter missing since Eid-ul-Adha. Acting on the complaint, which identified a local man named Nurul Amin as the primary suspect, a police team led by Sub-Inspector Md. Arkanul Islam conducted a raid in Fashiakhali to recover the girl and apprehend the suspect.

Witnesses and family members alleged that during the encounter, officers subjected both the suspect and the teenager to physical abuse. The conduct of the police prompted a confrontation with local residents, who retaliated by damaging the windshields of the police vehicles, including a CNG-run auto-rickshaw and a pickup truck. The situation was eventually de-escalated following the arrival of reinforcements led by Chakaria Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Monir Hossain.
According to family members, Nurul Amin has since been admitted to Chittagong Medical College Hospital for treatment of his injuries. The recovered teenager is currently being held in police protective custody.

Addressing the incident, OC Monir Hossain confirmed the withdrawal of Sub-Inspector Arkanul Islam, who has been transferred to the police lines pending further review. The official stated that while the primary objective was the recovery of the victim, the allegations of excessive force necessitated immediate disciplinary action. The kidnapping case against the suspect remains under investigation.
