Tension in Alamdanga over return of 4 UP chairman, clashes in one UP

Four UP chairmen of the Awami League-party banned from operating in Alamdanga upazila of Chuadanga have got the opportunity to return to their duties after 19 months on the orders of the high court. However, tension has arisen due to the obstruction of the leaders and workers of the local BNP and allied organizations on returning to office. A clash has also taken place in a union council.
According to local sources, Khadimpur UP chairman of the upazila, Mojahidur Rahman Joardar went to his office around 11 am on Thursday and faced obstacles from BNP leaders and workers. At least three people were injured in the clash between the two sides. Police patrolling in the area has been strengthened to control the situation.

Meanwhile, Khaskars UP Chairman Tafsir Ahmed Mallik, Chitla UP Chairman Hasanuzzaman Sarwar and Dauki UP Chairman Tariqul Islam did not go to UP office due to ‘fear of trouble’.
According to local government department sources, those four UP chairmen won the UP elections held on May 21, 2024. However, on August 5 of the same year, due to political changes in the country, these elected representatives went into hiding. In this situation, the Deputy Commissioner appointed the administrator by assigning full financial and administrative powers to four upazila level officials in an order on November 27. Meanwhile, the four chairmen filed a writ in the high court regarding the appointment of administrators. After the hearing, the court on March 12 this year suspended the effectivity of the order for six months and requested that the four chairmen be retained in their positions and given an opportunity to perform their duties.

In a letter signed by Helena Parveen, Deputy Secretary of Local Government Department UP Branch-1 on April 13, a request was made to take necessary measures regarding the retention of those four UP chairmen. District Commissioner Lutfun Nahar gave similar instructions to the Alamdanga upazila executive officer on April 22. Alamdanga Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Panna Aktar took the necessary initiative to uphold the respective chairmanships. On April 29, the four chairmen participated in the Upazila Law and Order Committee meeting.
The news of UP chairmen elected from the banned Awami League and allied organizations being retained in their positions was spread yesterday on Wednesday. When Khaskarra UP Chairman Tafsir Ahmed Mallik went to his office on Wednesday, he faced obstacles from the leaders and activists of BNP and allied organizations. Tafsir said, “The leaders and workers of the current ruling party obstructed. I did not turn away as they had sticks and sharp swords in their hands. However, today Thursday I have informed the Deputy Commissioner and UNO.
According to the police, Khadimpur UP Chairman Mojahidur Rahman went to his office at about 11 o’clock on Thursday. On getting the news, the party leaders led by Upazila Chhatra Dal convener Zahid Hasan and Upazila Volunteers Dal member secretary Raju Ahmed went to the union office and pressured the chairman to leave. On hearing the news, the chairman’s father, brave freedom fighter Jamsedur Rahman Joardar, and mother, retired school teacher Hosne Ara Begum, along with their followers rushed and both sides clashed. Chhatra Dal leaders Masud Rana and Saif and Abdul Quader, a resident of Khadimpur village, were injured. When the news spread, policemen quickly rushed to the spot and dispersed both sides and brought the situation under control.
Meanwhile, the Chhatra Dal held a protest march in Alamdanga town in the afternoon due to the injury of two Chhatra Dal leaders. District Chhatra Dal General Secretary Momin Malita led the procession. Momin Malita said, “There is dissatisfaction with the sitting of the friends of fascism.” That is why our leaders and workers requested him to leave the chair. However, a planned attack was carried out on them.
UP Chairman Mojahidur Rahman said, ‘We respect the law. Condemn today’s planned attack. There is trust in law enforcement. They will take the necessary measures.
Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Panna Akhter said that the matter has been reported to the Deputy Commissioner. The chairmen have been requested to fulfill their duties by discussing with all concerned including the law enforcement agencies.
Additional Superintendent of Police of Chuadanga Circle, Mostafizur Rahman, said that as soon as the incident in Khadimpur was known, the police were sent to bring the situation under control. Patrolling has been intensified in the area.
