The order on the bail application filed by Ekatar Television’s former news chief Shakeel Ahmed and former chief reporter-presenter Farzana Rupar has been deferred. In view of the state’s request for time, the High Court bench consisting of Justice KM Zahid Sarwar and Justice Sheikh Abu Taher granted two weeks’ time.

Earlier, Shakil Ahmed in six cases and Farzana Rupa in seven cases filed 13 separate bail applications in the High Court after failing in the subordinate court. The High Court fixed today as the date for hearing the petition on April 21.

Lawyer Jyotirmoy Barua on behalf of Shakeel and Farzana in the court and Deputy Attorney General Mohammad Ashikuzzaman Nazrul on behalf of the state were present in the hearing.

Later, Deputy Attorney General Mohammad Ashikuzzaman Nazrul told Prothom Alo that Shakil and Farzana applied for 13 separate bails. The applications were for orders. However, a month’s time is requested for the collection and submission of some documents related to the case. The court gave two weeks time. After two weeks the applications will be listed for order.

According to the relevant sources, out of 13 cases, 4 of Jatrabari Police Station, 1 of Mirpur Police Station and 1 of Tejgaon Police Station – both Shakil and Farzana are accused in these six cases. In these six cases, they filed six separate 12 bail applications. Apart from this, he has filed a separate application seeking bail in another case of Mohammadpur police station against Farzana Rupa.

Shakil Ahmed was working as Chief Messager and Farzana Rupa as Chief Correspondent in Ekatar Television. On August 8, 2024, they were removed from their duties. Police arrested them from Dhaka’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on August 21. Later, they were arrested in the murder case of a person named Fazlul Karim in Uttara district of the capital during the anti-discrimination student movement. After their arrest, they were remanded several times. Now they are in jail.
