Two passenger buses collide in Patia, 21 injured

Two passenger buses collided in Chittagong’s Patia. At least 21 people in the two buses were injured. The condition of two of them is alarming. They are being treated at Chittagong Medical College Hospital. The accident took place at Indrapul Roundabout on Patia Bypass of Chittagong-Cox’s Bazar highway at around four o’clock in the morning on Friday.

According to police and hospital sources, a tourist bus named ‘Himachal Paribahan’ leaving Noakhali was heading towards Cox’s Bazar. At the same time another bus named ‘Evergreen’ Paribahan was going to Chittagong from Cox’s Bazar. When the two buses reached the Indrapul roundabout of the upazila, a head-on collision took place. Later, highway police personnel rescued the passengers in the bus and took them to Patia Health Complex.

Patia Upazila Health Complex’s emergency department doctor Trishna Sarkar told Prothom Alo that 21 people injured in the accident were brought to the hospital. Ramgati upazila of Lakshmipur among them. Suman (16) and Salauddin (25) of Comilla district have been sent to Chittagong Medical College Hospital for better treatment. Others were discharged with first aid.

Harunur Rashid, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Patia Crossing Highway Police Station, said that the accident happened around 4 am. It is initially assumed that the driver of the tourist bus from Noakhali is new to this road. He did not understand the direction of the roundabout and lost control causing a collision with the reversing bus. Two buses involved in the accident have been kept in police custody.
