Mother dies after Narayanganj gas blast as death toll reaches two

A 24-year-old woman has died from injuries sustained in a gas explosion in Narayanganj, marking the second fatality in her family following the death of her eight-year-old son two days earlier. Beauty Akter passed away at 6:45 a.m. on Monday while undergoing treatment at the Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery in Dhaka.
The death was confirmed by Dr. Shawon Bin Rahman, the resident physician at the institute. Beauty’s husband, 28-year-old Maidul Islam, remains hospitalized in critical condition.
The tragedy began early last Friday when a gas explosion occurred at a rented tin-shed house in the Chapatoli area of Kuripara, located in Ward 27 of Narayanganj’s Bandar Upazila. The victims, a family of three, were inside the residence at the time of the blast. Their son, Maruf, succumbed to his injuries on Saturday afternoon.
Fire service officials suspect that a gas leak from a utility line caused the blast. Investigators believe that gas accumulated inside the room because the windows were sealed. Preliminary reports suggest the explosion was likely triggered when Maidul Islam, a mason by profession, attempted to light a cigarette at dawn, igniting the trapped gas.
Authorities have initiated an investigation to determine the definitive cause of the explosion and to assess safety lapses at the site.
