Anthropic Launches Secret Biological Laboratory to Advance AI Drug Discovery

US-based artificial intelligence firm Anthropic has quietly established a physical research facility in the San Francisco Bay Area to conduct biological experimentation, advancing its ambitious goals in the field of medicine and life sciences.

The creation of the wet lab marks a transition for the startup, moving its biological research beyond purely in silico, or computer-based, evaluations. Eric Kauderer-Abrams, head of Anthropic's life sciences division, confirmed the existence of the laboratory in an interview. He noted that biological research still requires validation in physical laboratories, a reality that will persist for some time. Anthropic operates similarly to traditional biotechnology firms, conducting part of the work in its own facility while partnering with external entities for the remainder.

A company spokesperson clarified that the laboratory is specifically designed for drug discovery, though further details were withheld. According to sources familiar with the matter, the initiative represents an initial step toward a broader ambition to target diseases historically neglected by the conventional pharmaceutical industry.

The venture is closely tied to the personal motivations of Anthropic Chief Executive Officer Dario Amodei, whose father died of an illness for which a treatment was discovered only years later. Kauderer-Abrams echoed this sentiment, stating that the company aims to develop powerful artificial intelligence for global benefit, with life sciences offering the greatest potential impact.

Anthropic believes artificial intelligence can accelerate the discovery of complex molecules such as bispecific and trispecific antibodies, which are capable of targeting multiple points on specific proteins or cells simultaneously. The company has not disclosed the specific diseases it is targeting or the current progress of its research.

Industry observers note that drug development faces significant hurdles, as the majority of experimental drugs ultimately fail during clinical trials due to safety and efficacy requirements. Even competitors such as Isomorphic Labs, the drug discovery unit of Alphabet, have yet to reach the human clinical trial stage, recently pushing their timeline to late 2026.

To expand the use of automation across industries and research settings, Anthropic introduced a model hardware standard in August, enabling artificial intelligence systems to directly control physical laboratory equipment.
