Garment workers in Dhaka's Mirpur area blocked roads and staged demonstrations on Sunday morning, demanding a minimum monthly wage of 30,000 Taka.
The protest began at approximately 8:00 AM when workers from several readymade garment factories took to the streets, occupying the busy Mirpur-10 intersection. The blockade severely disrupted vehicular movement across major thoroughfares in the surrounding areas, causing significant commuting delays for residents and workers alike.
Inspector (SI) of Mirpur Police Station, confirmed that workers from multiple factories gathered at various locations in Mirpur early in the morning before converging on the Mirpur-10 intersection. Law enforcement personnel were promptly dispatched to the scene to maintain order and manage the tense situation.
This unrest follows similar demonstrations held on Saturday, when garment workers also blocked roads to press for the same wage demands. Saturday's protests brought traffic to a complete halt from 10:30 AM to 1:00 PM across Mirpur-10, Mirpur-11, Mirpur-12, and adjacent neighborhoods.
During Saturday's demonstrations, protesters later gathered in the Shah Ali area of Mirpur-1, where incidents of vandalism were reported at several markets and garment factories. The situation escalated into physical altercations, chases, and clashes between the workers and security guards. Additionally, protesters hurled brickbats at a garment factory in the Kalshi area.
