Mirpur Model Police arrested three brothers on Thursday for their alleged involvement in systematic extortion, control of the ready-made garment scrap trade, illegal occupation of plots and flats, and the regulation of footpaths in the capital. The operation was part of a targeted drive by law enforcement to dismantle organized criminal activities within the Mirpur area.
The detainees have been identified as Mohammad Mehedi Hasan, alias Joy, 39, Sanjim Hasan, 27, and Mohammad Amit Hasan, 28. According to police reports, the three suspects are the nephews of Mofizur Rahman Mamun, Mashiur Rahman, and Jamilur Rahman, alias Jamil—individuals identified by authorities as the primary leaders of the notorious criminal outfit known as the Four Star Group. Their mother, Nasima Begum, is the elder sister of the aforementioned group leaders. The arrests follow recent media reports detailing the criminal influence wielded by the trio in the Mirpur vicinity.
A press release issued by the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) revealed that preliminary investigations indicate the extortion proceeds collected by Mehedi Hasan were being funneled to the three syndicate leaders currently in hiding abroad. Mehedi Hasan faces specific charges related to extortion, monopolizing the garment scrap trade, land grabbing, and operating local juvenile gangs. Similarly, Sanjim Hasan stands accused of leveraging the group’s influence to command youth gangs and establish territorial dominance in the area.
Interrogations conducted by the authorities have confirmed that the arrested individuals maintained constant contact with their relatives abroad. Investigators discovered that the trio utilized mobile communication to coordinate operations and report on illicit financial activities directly to the fugitives.
The suspects are currently being held in connection with a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act at Mirpur Model Police Station. Law enforcement officials confirmed that the case was officially registered on September 30, and the ongoing investigation aims to further uncover the network's broader financial and operational reach.
