Visually impaired man in Meherpur transforms adversity into computer training success

Thirty-six-year-old Md Omar Faruk Mamun, a visually impaired man from Meherpur district, has redefined resilience by overcoming profound adversity to carve out a successful career as a computer trainer. Hailing from Shibpur village in Monakhali Union of Mujibnagar Upazila, Omar Faruk lost his eyesight entirely during his higher secondary studies, facing a seemingly dark and uncertain future. Refusing to surrender to his circumstances or depend on others, he harnessed an indomitable willpower to master computer operations independently, eventually transforming himself from a struggling student into an inspiring educator who now imparts digital skills to others.

The arduous journey toward self-reliance began when glaucoma was diagnosed in both of his eyes while he was in the ninth grade. Despite medical interventions, his vision progressively deteriorated. Although he successfully passed his Secondary School Certificate examinations in 2004, he lost his eyesight completely while studying in the science stream at the higher secondary level, forcing a disruption in his education that prevented him from appearing for his Higher Secondary Certificate exams in 2006. Demonstrating relentless perseverance, he resumed his studies after a prolonged hiatus, passing his HSC in 2012 and subsequently earning his degree under the Bangladesh Open University in 2018.

Mastering information technology without vision presented an extraordinary challenge, which Omar Faruk surmounted by developing innovative self-learning techniques. Leveraging online tutorials on platforms like YouTube, he acquired comprehensive knowledge of computer hardware and software, while honing his typing proficiency and navigational skills through rigorous practice. His dedication caught formal recognition when he completed a computer training program from the Department of Social Services in Meherpur in 2013, paving the way for his official appointment as a part-time computer instructor by the same department on July 7, 2015.

For the past eleven years, Omar Faruk has served diligently at the Meherpur district social services office, where his unique instructional methods continue to astonish both students and colleagues. Possessing an acute sense of hearing, he can accurately discern typed words and sentences solely by listening to the keystrokes, erasing any perceptible barrier caused by his disability. Sohel Mahmud, a social services officer in Meherpur, lauded his exceptional contributions, noting that his teaching quality is so seamless that observers would never guess he is visually impaired, prompting local authorities to prepare a formal recommendation to higher officials for his permanent appointment.

Reflecting on his transformative journey, Omar Faruk emphasizes that true self-sufficiency extends beyond managing daily chores to establishing a dignified standing in society through personal competence, a sentiment shared with immense pride by his mother, Khadija Khatun. Childhood friend and classmate Toufiqul Islam noted that while many peers dropped out of school to pursue farming or business, Omar Faruk rose above his physical limitations through sheer determination. Today, his life stands as a powerful testament to the fact that losing physical sight does not mean losing one's vision for the future, offering a profound source of inspiration for individuals navigating similar trials.
