Kurigram NCP leader resigns citing ideological deviation and autocratic practices

National Citizen Party Kurigram district organizational secretary resigns citing autocratic practices and policy deviations while local MP rejects the allegations

Md. Nurunnabi Sarkar, organizing secretary of the Kurigram district branch of Jatiya Nagorik Party (NCP), has resigned from all organizational positions and primary membership of the party, citing policy deviations, ideological departures, and autocratic practices.

He announced his resignation on Sunday morning (Oct 5) during a press conference held at the Kurigram Press Club, confirming that he has dispatched a formal resignation letter to the party's central committee. Reading from a prepared statement, Nurunnabi noted that while he had long discharged his responsibilities with dedication and integrity to strengthen the party at the grassroots level, the expectations of general workers and supporters could no longer be fulfilled due to recent policy flaws and autocratic tendencies within the leadership, making it impossible for him to remain in the organization while upholding his self-respect and ideals.

During a subsequent question-and-answer session, Nurunnabi leveled specific allegations against Atiqur Rahman, a Member of Parliament from the Kurigram-2 constituency, accusing the lawmaker of unilateral decision-making regarding the formation of district and upazila committees as well as candidate nominations for local government elections. He claimed that Atiqur exercised absolute, solitary authority over the Kurigram district NCP and routinely dismissed proposals from other party members.

Rejecting the allegations entirely, lawmaker Atiqur Rahman countered that Nurunnabi Sarkar had actually been expelled from the party following the national elections, raising questions about the legitimacy of his resignation press conference. Atiqur asserted that Nurunnabi held no official position within the district committee, maintained that as a central leader he does not interfere in local committee matters, and emphasized that local appointments are strictly determined by the district committee while branding Nurunnabi's remarks as false propaganda.

Meanwhile, Kurigram district NCP Convener Md. Mukul Mia expressed surprise over the development, stating that Nurunnabi was indeed one of the four organizing secretaries of the district committee, but the reasons behind his abrupt departure remained unclear to him. Mukul Mia added that Nurunnabi never had any strained relations with the district committee prior to his resignation.
