Bangladesh and U.S. Armies Launch Tiger Lightning Joint Military Exercise in Sylhet
The Bangladesh Army and the United States Army Pacific (USARPAC) officially commenced the joint military exercise "Tiger Lightning 2026" on Sunday at the Para Commando Brigade headquarters within the Jalalabad Cantonment in Sylhet.
The 13-day exercise, scheduled to run through July 31, was inaugurated by Bangladesh Army Chief of General Staff Lieutenant General Md. Moinur Rahman and U.S. Ambassador to Bangladesh Brent E. Christensen. The training event is being facilitated under the supervision of the Bangladesh Army's specialized Para Commando Brigade.
Ambassador Christensen emphasized that the joint drill serves as a cornerstone of the growing strategic partnership between the two nations. He described the initiative as more than a routine training mission, characterizing it as a testament to the enduring friendship, mutual respect, and a shared commitment to fostering an open, secure, and prosperous Indo-Pacific region.
Lieutenant General Moinur Rahman echoed these sentiments, noting that Tiger Lightning stands as a primary vehicle for strengthening bilateral military relations. He stated that the exercise is designed to enhance operational capabilities and deepen professional bonds, which will ultimately contribute to the long-term strategic cooperation between the two armed forces.
The exercise involves a total of 184 personnel, with 91 representatives from the U.S. Army Pacific and the Oregon National Guard working alongside 93 members from the Bangladesh Army’s Para Commando Brigade and other specialized formations. The curriculum focuses on advancing joint operational readiness, refining tactical proficiencies, and fostering regional security cooperation.
Beyond the immediate scope of the drills, the collaboration reflects a broader ongoing engagement between Bangladesh and the United States regarding counter-terrorism, disaster management, and humanitarian assistance. Officials underscored that Bangladesh remains committed to working alongside international partners to address global security threats and humanitarian challenges.
The opening ceremony was attended by the Deputy Commanding General for Strategy and Plans of U.S. Army Pacific, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 17th Infantry Division and Area Commander of Sylhet, the Commandant of the School of Infantry and Tactics, as well as senior military officials and diplomats from both nations.
