A man has been sentenced to life imprisonment in the case of heroin recovery in Hatirjheel
In the case of recovery of 1 kg 200 grams of heroin and 1.5 kg of heroin-like powder from Hatirjheel area of the capital. The court sentenced a person named Ujjal Ali to life imprisonment. At the same time, he has been fined 50 thousand taka, in default of payment he has been sentenced to another two months rigorous imprisonment.

According to the documents of the case, the Organized Crime and Car Theft Prevention Team of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) conducted a raid in the morning of September 2 last year in front of a house named Tisha Kuthi in Madhubagh area of Hatirjheel.
Ujjwal Ali was arrested in the operation based on secret information. Later, at one stage of his body search and interrogation, 1 kg of 200 grams of heroin in 12 plastic packets and 1.5 kg of heroin-like powder in 25 packets were recovered from the house shown by him.
In this incident, DB Sub-Inspector (SI) Muhammad Ghiyas Uddin filed a case under Narcotics Control Act at Hatirjheel police station. After the investigation, the charge sheet was submitted to the court. The market value of the seized drugs was stated in the charge sheet to be around one crore rupees.
After framing the charges in the case, the testimony of nine persons included in the charge sheet was taken during the trial. After presenting arguments on May 11, the court fixed today (May 20) for the verdict.
In observing the verdict, the court said that a large amount of heroin and heroin-like powder was recovered from the accused. Such drug trafficking and illegal trade has a dire impact on the society and causes social degradation. Therefore, there is no admissible reason to reduce the sentence of the accused.
The judgment also said that the time spent by the accused in the court during the trial and investigation shall be deducted from the original sentence under Section 35-A of the Code of Criminal Procedure. Apart from this, the court ordered to destroy the seized drugs and other evidence as per the law after the appeal period.
