Court Grants Three-Day Remand for Suspect in Fatal Mirpur Shooting
A Dhaka court has granted a three-day remand for 34-year-old Chanchal Mollya following the fatal shooting of Jubo Dal activist Yusuf Ali in the capital’s Mirpur area. Metropolitan Magistrate Aminul Islam Junaed issued the order on Saturday after police presented the suspect and requested a 10-day interrogation period to uncover the source of the weapon and track down remaining suspects.
The incident occurred late Wednesday night in the Block-C area of Mirpur-13. According to police reports, Ali was targeted by gunmen near the Opex garment factory. A bullet struck him in the right side of his chest, exiting through his back. The indiscriminate gunfire also wounded two bystanders, identified as vegetable vendor Nalam Sardar and passerby Monir Hossain. While local residents rushed the victims to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, Ali succumbed to his injuries shortly after midnight.
Mollya was apprehended by local residents near a shop shortly after the shooting and subsequently handed over to the police, who seized a foreign-made pistol, a magazine, and four rounds of ammunition from his possession. Following the arrest, authorities filed two separate cases at the Kafrul Police Station: one involving the Arms Act and another for murder filed by the victim’s brother, Masud Rana.
Investigators have identified four individuals as suspects in the cases, including Mollya. The three remaining suspects—Jihad Mollya, Jiarul Mollya, and a man named Hasan—are currently on the run. Police sub-inspector Wazed Khan of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police prosecution department confirmed the court’s decision as investigators continue to pursue leads regarding the motive behind the premeditated attack.
