Dinajpur Police Arrest Three Political Activists Over Abduction and Extortion Allegations
Dinajpur police have arrested three members of the Jatiya Nagarik Party’s (NCP) youth wing, Juba Shakti, on charges of kidnapping and extortion. The suspects were taken into custody on Monday afternoon at the Gor-e-Shahid Baro Math in Dinajpur city, where officers also successfully rescued the victim, 54-year-old Abdus Samad.
The arrested individuals include Arif Mun, the central assistant organizing secretary of Juba Shakti, along with his associates Hasin Israk and Ajmir Hossain, both 22. According to police reports, the operation followed a complaint filed by the victim’s son, Md. Mamun, who alleged that his father had been abducted the previous night from his second wife’s residence in the Gopalganj area.
The complainant stated that a group of approximately 12 people, led by individuals identifying themselves as Rubel and Rohan, forcibly seized Samad and transported him away in a microbus. Following the arrest of the three suspects on Monday, tensions escalated at the Kotwali police station as other NCP members allegedly attempted to secure their release, resulting in a physical altercation between party activists and police officers.
NCP officials have characterized the incident as a dispute over a financial transaction. They claim that Samad, who works in real estate, had previously accepted 450,000 taka from a relative of Ajmir Hossain under the pretense of facilitating a land deal. When the transaction failed to materialize—leading to legal complications for the investor—NCP members allegedly took Samad to recover the funds. According to the party, the abduction claim was filed by the victim's family to avoid repaying the money.
Kotwali Police Station officer-in-charge Nur-e-Nabi confirmed that authorities are currently in the process of filing a formal case. While acknowledging the financial element reported by the suspects, the police are proceeding with the kidnapping charges as investigations continue.
