Dhaka Court Sentences Three to Life Imprisonment for 2002 Gang Rape
A Dhaka tribunal sentenced three men to life imprisonment on Tuesday for the gang rape of a woman in Nawabganj 24 years ago. Judge Munshi Md. Moshiar Rahman of the Dhaka Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-4 delivered the verdict, bringing closure to a case that originated in 2002.
The convicts, identified as Sujan, Julhas, and Mohammad, were also ordered to pay a fine of 100,000 taka each. According to state prosecutor Md. Ershad Alam, failure to pay the penalty will result in an additional year of rigorous imprisonment for the defendants. The court further directed the District Magistrate to ensure that the fines are collected through the sale of the convicts' movable and immovable assets, with the proceeds to be awarded to the victim or her family.
The legal proceedings concluded after the court examined the testimonies of seven witnesses. The original criminal complaint was filed by the victim at the Nawabganj Police Station on March 22, 2002. Following an investigation, police submitted a formal charge sheet against the three suspects on July 18 of that same year.
Sujan and Mohammad were present in the courtroom when the verdict was announced and were subsequently sent to prison with warrants. The third defendant, Julhas, remains a fugitive. The court has issued a warrant for his arrest to serve the sentence.
