Bangladesh man arrested for assaulting wife over World Cup match viewing
Police in Ramganj, Lakshmipur, have arrested a 30-year-old man following the circulation of a viral video that captured him brutally assaulting his wife for attempting to prevent him from leaving to watch the FIFA World Cup final. The suspect, Jahir Hossain, was taken into custody on Monday night and subsequently produced before a local court on Tuesday.
The incident occurred late Sunday night in the Brahmapara Wapda Tek area of Kanchanpur Union. According to police reports, the altercation began when the victim, 20-year-old Mariam Begum, requested her husband not to leave their home to watch the match while she was alone with their five-month-old infant. The request triggered a violent outburst from Hossain, an auto-rickshaw driver, who allegedly used a stick to repeatedly strike his wife.
The two-minute video, which surfaced on social media, shows the victim weeping and screaming as her husband confronts her over the dispute. Following the broadcast of the footage, local law enforcement intervened to detain Hossain. Mariam Begum later filed a formal complaint at the Ramganj Police Station, citing that she had been subjected to physical abuse.
Investigations into the domestic violence case reveal a pattern of abuse. Neighbors informed police that Hossain struggles with substance abuse and frequently assaulted his wife under the influence. The couple, who married two years ago, have reportedly faced ongoing domestic strife, with the victim sustaining significant injuries to her hands during the latest attack.
Ramganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Firoz Uddin Chowdhury confirmed that legal proceedings are currently underway. The victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment following the rescue by family members, and the authorities are now moving forward with the prosecution of the suspect.
