Former army officer Afzal Nasser remanded for three days in the attempted murder case
The court once again granted three-day remand for questioning former Director General of Defense Intelligence (DGFI) Lt. Col. (retd) Afzal Nacher in the case of attempted murder of Jagannath University student Anik Kumar Das during the July agitation.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Hasibuzzaman gave this order in view of the application of the investigating officer of the case on Monday. Deputy Inspector of Prosecution Anup Kumar Das confirmed the remand grant.
Afzal Nasher was produced in the court today after two six-day remands. For the sake of proper investigation of the case, the investigation officer of Kotwali police station, SIKM Abdul Haque requested to remand him for another five days. On the other hand, the lawyer of the accused requested to cancel the remand and prayed for bail. State counsel Muhammad Shamchuddoha Suman argued for remand. After hearing both sides, the court rejected the bail application and ordered a three-day remand.
According to the court and case documents, Afzal Nasher was granted remand several times in several cases. On April 17 and 20, he was remanded for three days in the Delwar murder case. After that, the court granted remand for four days on April 23, two days on April 27, three days on April 29 and another three days on May 2 in the Mahmudul murder case. Anik Kumar Das was recently remanded for three days on May 5 and another three days on May 8 in the attempt-to-murder case.
In the complaint of this case, it is said that on July 16, 2024, when the agitators crossed the main gate of Jagannath University and reached in front of the Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court, the leaders and activists of Awami League, Jubo League and Chhatra League opened fire on them. A student Anik Kumar Das was shot and injured. He was first given first aid at the National Medical College Hospital. Later he was admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Anik left the hospital on July 31 after surgery there. After 4 months of that incident, on 21 November 2024, he filed the attempted murder case at Kotwali police station.
Afzal Nacher served as Director of DGFI from March 2006 to March 2008. The detective police arrested him from a house of Mirpur DOHS in the late night of March 29.
The next day, he was arrested in the case of the death of a person named Delwar Hossain in the July movement. The court granted his six-day remand in that case. After that, BNP worker Maqbul was arrested in the murder case and he was interrogated in four rounds and remanded for a total of 11 days.
