High Court Summons Habiganj Judge Over Four-Year Delay in Rape and Murder Trial
The High Court has summoned a judge of the Habiganj Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal to explain why a rape and murder case has remained unresolved for more than four and a half years. A bench comprising Justice K.M. Imrul Kayesh and Justice Md. Sogir Hossain issued the directive on Tuesday, mandating that the judge of the tribunal’s third court appear in person on June 23 to provide a formal explanation regarding the judicial delay.
The order was issued suo motu during a hearing for the bail plea of the defendant, Golam Hossain. According to Deputy Attorney General Mohammad Mohsin Kabir, the court took notice of the protracted litigation after reviewing the case trajectory. The legal proceedings stem from a complaint filed at Nabiganj Police Station on December 28, 2021, under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act, involving allegations of rape and the fatal stabbing of the victim.
Defense counsel Md. Abdur Razzaq stated that the case has remained stagnant since the charges were framed, noting that despite the significant passage of time, no witnesses have appeared to testify. The state was represented by a team including Deputy Attorney General Mohammad Mohsin Kabir and Assistant Attorneys General Md. Jasim Uddin, Al Reza Md. Amir, and Ishrat Jahan, while the defense was represented by lawyers Md. Abdur Razzaq and Abdul Jalil.
