Witness testifies: Awami League members threatened if you take bullets, you cant stay in the area

A witness testified before the International Crimes Tribunal-1 on Tuesday that he was shot during the July mass uprising, recounting how individuals identified with the Awami League threatened him and ordered him to leave his neighborhood.

Mohammad Ruhul Amin, appearing as the sixth witness in a case concerning crimes against humanity committed in Dhaka’s Rampura and Banasree areas during the July uprising, detailed his ordeal. The case implicates former Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) official Lieutenant Colonel Mohammad Redwanul Islam, BGB officer Mohammad Rafat-bin-Alam Mun, former Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Mohammad Rashedul Islam, and former Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Moshiur Rahman. Redwanul and Rafat were present at the tribunal, while Rashedul and Moshiur remain at large.

Amin, who works as a caretaker, stated that on the afternoon of July 19, 2024, he went to the Meradia market near Rampura Police Station to observe student protests. There, he witnessed BGB, police, and Awami League members firing at students. He described seeing several people killed and others injured, all bleeding. Fearing for his safety, Amin began to retreat toward his home when a bullet struck him below the waist, exiting through the front.

He recounted falling to the ground after being shot and being taken to Mugda Medical College Hospital by several individuals. However, Amin stated he was forcibly discharged from the hospital on the night of July 20, 2024. He alleged that Awami League members had threatened hospital staff, instructing them to administer lethal injections to those shot. No medical documents were provided to him upon his discharge.

Upon returning home, Amin testified that members of the Awami League visited him, informing him he could no longer reside in the area due to his injuries. He found solace in the support of a non-aligned individual from the neighborhood and subsequently sought treatment at Farazi Hospital at his own expense.

In his testimony, Amin also identified BGB officers Redwan and Rafat, along with police officers Rashed and OC Moshiur, as those responsible for the shooting, information he gleaned from Facebook and YouTube. He concluded by demanding justice for the accused.
