Serial Impersonator Arrested in Bangladesh Following Multi-City Fraud Investigation
A 28-year-old man from Dinajpur has been arrested following an extensive investigation into a sophisticated fraud operation that involved posing as a high-ranking government official to swindle young women. Mosharrof Hossain, a resident of Chirirbandar upazila, was taken into custody on Tuesday morning after students at a local dormitory in Dinajpur city grew suspicious of his claims and detained him upon his return to the premises.
Hossain had meticulously crafted a false persona, frequently appearing on social media in high-end attire and claiming to have secured positions as an administration cadre in the 46th BCS, a foreign service officer in the 47th, and a police official in the 49th. While he maintained the facade of a successful bureaucrat to gain social standing, he later admitted during interrogation that he only possessed an SSC-level education.
The deception began to unravel when residents of the dormitory where Hossain was staying discovered existing fraud charges against him, prompting him to briefly flee. When he returned to collect his belongings, he was cornered by students who reported his activities to the Dinajpur Kotwali police.
Evidence gathered from Hossain's mobile device reveals a pattern of illicit financial transactions, with victims allegedly losing sums ranging from 10,000 to one lakh taka. Following news of his arrest, multiple victims have stepped forward, including a woman from Rangamati who traveled to Dinajpur to report that she had been defrauded of 12 lakh taka. She alleged that Hossain coerced the money from her under the guise of resolving complications related to his supposed government appointment.
According to Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Nurnabi of the Kotwali police station, the suspect’s criminal history is extensive. In addition to the pending case in Cox's Bazar filed by the woman from Rangamati, Hossain faces trial in Nilphamari for allegedly posing as an army officer to enter into a fraudulent marriage. Authorities are currently processing further complaints from additional victims as they continue to investigate the full scope of his activities.
