University student hospitalized after overnight kidnapping and extortion in Dhaka

A 25-year-old university student is receiving medical treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital after being held captive and tortured throughout the night in the capital’s Wari area. The victim, Subhash Deuri, a student at Central Law College and a resident of Magura’s Shripur upazila, was allegedly subjected to severe physical abuse and extortion by a group that held him hostage until Tuesday morning.
According to family members and associates, the ordeal began on Monday night. Subhash’s sister, Jaya Deuri, reported receiving a call from her brother’s phone around 1:00 a.m. from an unidentified individual demanding 30,000 taka. Shortly after, Subhash contacted his family himself, pleading for the payment while under duress, warning that his life was at risk. In a desperate attempt to secure his safety, the family transferred 26,000 taka to an account provided by the captors.

The victim’s roommate, Durjoy Saha, noted that he initially dismissed a ransom demand he received on his phone late Monday night. Upon returning home from watching a football match at approximately 5:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Saha discovered Subhash abandoned near a local bank in the Narinda area, suffering from significant injuries to his head, hands, and legs. Subhash’s personal belongings, including his mobile phone and wallet, were missing.
Subhash later recounted to hospital staff and associates that he was detained from 10:00 p.m. until 4:00 a.m. During this time, his captors reportedly stripped him, recorded compromising videos, and coerced him into calling his family to arrange the ransom payment. Inspector Md. Faruk of the Dhaka Medical College Hospital police outpost confirmed that the victim was admitted for treatment early Tuesday morning in critical condition.

Local law enforcement has launched an investigation into the incident. Officer-in-Charge Mofizur Rahman of the Wari Police Station stated that authorities are currently gathering evidence and attempting to identify the perpetrators.
The case drew additional attention following social media reports claiming the victim was an assistant priest at the Jagannath University central temple. However, Anik Kumar Das, the member secretary of the university’s central temple, issued a formal statement on Facebook refuting these claims. He clarified that the victim is neither a student of Jagannath University nor an employee of the temple, asserting that the attack was an isolated, personal incident with no connection to the university’s institutional or administrative functions.
