Son accused of murdering parents in Chittagong following domestic dispute
A 32-year-old man was taken into custody by local residents on Saturday after allegedly murdering his parents during a violent altercation in Anwara, Chittagong. The incident occurred around 1:30 p.m. in the Kunirbil area of Hajilder Union, leaving 65-year-old Swapan Das Gupta and his 55-year-old wife, Kalpana Das Gupta, dead.
According to preliminary reports from the Anwara police, the confrontation was sparked by a dispute over the suspect’s unemployment. Police official Md. Junaet Chowdhury stated that the accused, Rimon Das Gupta, allegedly attacked his mother with a sickle and a pair of scissors following an argument. When his father intervened to protect her, he was also subjected to the same fatal assault.
Neighbors who rushed to the scene upon hearing cries for help found both victims critically injured. While Kalpana Das Gupta died at the scene, her husband succumbed to his injuries while being transported to a nearby hospital. Local residents detained Rimon at the location and turned him over to the authorities.
Community members have pointed to the suspect’s alleged history of substance abuse as a contributing factor. Neighbors, including Kalyan Das Gupta, noted that Rimon had struggled with drug addiction for years and had previously been sent to rehabilitation centers, leading to frequent domestic disputes. Eyewitness Meri Das Gupta described the scene as a horrific event that unfolded rapidly before neighbors could intervene.
The bodies of the victims have been sent to the morgue for autopsies. While police have identified the initial motive as a conflict over the suspect's lack of employment, officials confirmed they are expanding their investigation to determine the extent of the suspect's drug use and its role in the double homicide.
