Two dead, one critical following Dhaka gas cylinder explosion

Two people have died following a devastating gas cylinder explosion at a residence in the Vatara area of Dhaka earlier this week. The incident, which occurred Tuesday morning, has left a third family member in critical condition.
Eight-year-old Hafsa succumbed to her injuries at the intensive care unit of the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery on Friday morning. Her uncle, 25-year-old Anwar Hossain Shahin, died at the same facility late Thursday night. According to Dr. Shawon Bin Rahman, the institute’s resident surgeon, both victims had suffered severe burns; Anwar had sustained injuries over 50 percent of his body, while Hafsa’s burns covered 40 percent.

Fahima Akter, Anwar’s wife, remains in critical condition at the hospital’s intensive care unit. Physicians report that she has sustained burns over 45 percent of her body.
The explosion took place in the ground-floor apartment of a building located in the Notun Bazar area. While the official cause remains under investigation, local residents and neighbors suspect the blaze was triggered by a leak in the gas cylinder that filled the home before igniting.

Anwar, who worked at a local clothing store, had recently moved into the rental property with his wife after their marriage six months ago. The young girl, Hafsa, was visiting the couple at the time of the accident.
