Measles outbreak claims 689 lives in Bangladesh as infections surpass 95,000
Three more children have died from symptoms of measles in the last 24 hours, all reported within the Dhaka division, according to the latest data from the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS). This brings the total number of pediatric deaths linked to the current outbreak to 689 since March 15.
The DGHS report specifies that of the total casualties recorded since the start of the outbreak in mid-March, 93 deaths have been laboratory-confirmed as measles, while 596 children died while exhibiting symptoms of the disease.
Health officials reported 996 new cases of children presenting with measles symptoms over the past 24 hours, raising the cumulative count of symptomatic cases to 95,760. Of these, 11,390 cases have been clinically confirmed as measles, including 93 new diagnoses identified within the last day.
Hospitalization data indicates that 79,637 children have required clinical care for measles symptoms since March 15. The DGHS reported that the recovery rate remains high, with 75,882 patients having been discharged from medical facilities after successful treatment.
